Two things that annoy me

There are two things that I (sort of) can't stand which happen regularly on this forum, and since I do not want to be naggy about it I decided to vent my frustration with a topic here and laugh about it.

The first thing that rubs me in a kinda bad way is the (apparent) misuse of the general help section. Now, I am not really clear myself about what should be posted there since we have sections for CORE 13, SCALE and Virtualized Instances, but I seem to have reached a consensus with my brain to use that section for bare metal issues only since VM, passthroufgh and alike require a specific set of knowledge that does not come with the standard use of TrueNAS.
As such, every time I see TN as a VM in that section I am tempted to be the bad guy who does not add anything to the thread but a "you posted in the wrong place bro". You can thank me for resisting such temptations most of the time.

But the other issue I have is much bigger, it consumes me and threatens to bring to the light the dark side that is in me... it's when people refer to "TrueNAS" as "FreeNAS".
Now, I understand it used to be called that way, but it ain't no more! The free version is called now "TrueNAS", and the one shipped with the iX Systems' systems is called "TrueNAS Enterprise".
"FreeNAS" is a completely different thing, it's an old product/version and if you tell me "I'm using FreeNAS" I think you are using that old and dead version. It creates so much confusion in my head when I see someone writing "FreeNAS 13" or the likes.
Heck, it's written everywhere it's TrueNAS and not FreeNAS. It sounds even better!
FreeNAS is dead, Long live TrueNAS!

Please use proper naming.

I for one am happy with the results I'm getting on my home network with FreeNAS SCALE.

Pedentry aside, one thing to consider is that there are some users who don't stay current on their installation and may still be on FreeNAS. Of course the forum rules state in part to say what version of TrueNAS you may be running but if they are still on FreeNAS and haven't looked at the forum rules since they signed up for the forums (likely) then I can see where a user would be posting appropriately by saying FreeNAS.

What gets me more is that users requesting help that don't say what version of TrueNAS they are using, core or scale. I know there are different sections of the forum for each but it makes helping others difficult if they don't specify what version of TrueNAS they are using and don't pay attention to what section they are posting in.

There are, and then there are general sections, and then there are separate sections for various topics which could refer to either release. And now there's a separate section for SCALE Bluefin. iX have made a real dog's breakfast of the forum layout.

@Davvo Unfortunately people will do what they want, it is after all a Free World (you thought I was going to say FreeNAS didn't you). You will see me mention "FreeNAS" "TrueNAS" mainly when I recommend searching the internet for a given problem and that is because often you will find an old FreeNAS problem which answers the question. And honestly, to me the naming convention was just a marketing decision and nothing more. I still have my two FreeNAS T-Shirts so the naming didn't change that long ago. There are also some folks still running FreeNAS (because it works for them). The way I tell those people apart from a regular, they tend to post questions about how to replace a failing hard drive, something that is clearly and well documented in the User Guide. They setup a system 5 years ago and just let it run, no updates, it just works, until it doesn't.

But seriously, it would be nice if proper terminology were used but so many people just jump into this thing which is new to them and they try to relate it to something they heard of in the past. For example RAIDZ-2 is not RAID5 or whatever.

All you can do is suggest nicely if possible that they made an error and tell them what they should do next time. Of course you can report it as well.

And it's okay to vent your frustrations and the Off-Topic section was a good place to do that. You did not bash anyone specifically and added a little light humor. When I get frustrated with the forum, I close my web browser. I'm too old and senile to deal with some of the repeated questions and lazy people that post questions without even attempting to look up the answers themselves. Damn lazy! My father would have kicked me in the ass if I was that lazy. If you don't understand, that is fine and those I like to answer if I can, but not even trying is not fine.

Well you got me bitching. Time to close the browser. Not because I'm frustrated but because it's after midnight and I'm not in my 20's anymore.

Oh yeah! There seems to be an increasing number of people out there you are unable to use Google. Or unwilling, and I am still debating with myself which alternative I find more worrying. The interesting aspect of this is that it seems to be an international phenomenon.

The other group that shows in "interesting" behavior, are those who freely admit (directly or indirectly) that they have little knowledge about a subject, but still argue like they were the experts. Often they are so much in their "ivory tower" that you cannot even discuss logically with them. Just had something like this over the last couple of days and it was kind-of interesting.
