Did you reset the CMOS after the bios update?

Yeah but it looks like pulling out the cmos battery was the only way to do it. I'm back in BIOS. I think what caused it was setting my USB port as the primary boot but I thought that's what you are supposed to do. Is there anything really in the BIOS I should change? It's set to ACHI.

Yeah I just did again. I'm in bios. I think what did it was setting the USB drive as 1st boot priority. I thought that's what you're supposed to do though. Is there any BIOS settings I should change? Disable USB 3.0?

Booting from USB is correct if FreeNAS is correctly installed to the USB drive. Boot from virtual cd if reinstalling. You should disable USB 3.0.

After a good hour of shoveling snow.. came back... and it worked.... Now to figure out FreeNAS lol.
