TrueNAS system freezes every minute for a couple of seconds

I got a TrueNAS 13-U3 system with 32 GB of RAM that freezes / hangs every few minutes for about 10-20 seconds.
I found that these hangs stop occurring when I stop my only VM which have 8 GB RAM allocated.

26 GB should be sufficient for TrueNAS, right? Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this and still run the VM?

That sounds like you are swapping. The NAS assumes it can use all of the physical memory. You have to use a tunable to limit the amount of memory it will allocate for the ARC if you are running VM's. You could also throw more memory at it.
