The TrueNAS Minis now have a Drive Compatibility List! These are drives that our Engineering Team has tested and found to be compatible with our current generation of TrueNAS Mini products. The list can be found here, at the bottom of the page.

On this Drive Compatibility List, you can see that some drive models listed have an asterisk. This indicates that the drive uses higher power and is not recommended for the eight Bay Mini XL+. For the TrueNAS Mini XL+, we recommend using drives that consume 7W of power or less to avoid the possibility of overheating, especially when not used in a climate-controlled environment.

The WD Red Plus 10TB is one of these higher power drives. The previous version of the WD Red Plus 10TB (WD100EFAX) used helium and only consumed 5.7W of power per drive. The newer versions of the WD Red Plus 10TB hard drives (WD100EFBX) are filled with air, so they consume more power (8.4W), and generate more heat. In an eight-drive Mini XL+ configuration, this generates enough heat to put the drives at their upper thresholds which could reduce reliability.

For those of you that need large capacities, we recommend using the WD Red Plus 14TB drive models, which use helium and consume less power (6.5W).

Please note that the WD Red Plus 10TB is still available for the Mini E and Mini X or X+. The TrueNAS Mini E can populate up to four bays with 3.5” drives, and the TrueNAS Mini X and X+ can populate up to five bays with 3.5” drives. Since there are fewer drives consuming power and generating heat, our recommendation for these models is to use hard drives that consume less than 8.5W of power.

We’ll update the Compatibility List as drives change. Let us know if you have any questions!
