Can't speak for other LSI HBA's, but I run HPE H220 ad I have had zero issues with it.

Well, thank you everyone for your help, I've managed to resolve the issue.

Despite being virtualized the Aquantia NIC does not play nice with TrueNAS Core, I discovered this by passing an intel NIC through PCIE to the TN core machine and then everything started working. Then I changed the vswitch on ESXI to use the intel NIC and went back to vmxnet3 virtual NIC and it all performs properly, so it works virtualized or passed through, guess it's time to retire the aquantia card or use it elsewhere.

Sorry to bump this again but I was getting slowdown after prolonged file transfer down to 10MB/sec over a 5 gig link from my workstation, I went back to passthrough as this is the only machine that needs 10G anyway, and its working flawlessly for many hours of copying now, ranging in speeds from 90-350+MB/sec.
