weird...so i started booting it up (had to do a fresh install. DHCP wouldnt work and couldnt change the IP) and then blam-o the screen turned all sorts of bright colors and random special characters were going crazy all across it.

wish i took a picture. looked awesome, probably meant bad things though

i swear. i should be a beta tester for things. if it's electronic and it can be broken, i can and will break it.

Sounds like you have knackered hardware, to be honest. I'd suggest getting the memtest86 bootable ISO and use it to test the RAM next.

I used the Ubuntu Memory test a week or two ago and it said everything was working properly. Is that a viable RAM Test?

MemTest86+ is something you can use. Download the bootable ISO image and create a CD from it. Run it overnight at a minimum. You want at least 3 complete passes of all the tests.

Are you overclocking your system? If not then go into the BIOS and select the default BIOS setup and save it. Try again. You may need to change to AHCI again after changing the BIOS.

If your RAM fails then it could be many things causing the problem... The RAM, Power Supply, Motherboard, and possibly the CPU but generally not.

Good Luck

hmm maybe i should clarify. when i enter "dmsg -d > /mnt/volume1/share/errors.txt" it says "bash: dmsg: command not found"

ill try the memtest iso when i get a chance

....ubuntu won't work and their forums suck.

*sigh*
If you cannot run Ubuntu from a bootable CD (or flash drive), you likely have hardware issues. Ubuntu is a very mature operating system with minimal requirements. The instructions are on the Ubuntu website along with the downloads on how to install it on Flash or I'd just run it from a CD, don't install it. Not sure why you were trying to use Ubuntu but as I said, if you can't get it to run, you likely have hardware issues.

Yeah i know how to run USB/CD Live boots. did a ton of them, but the system only sometimes gets past the load screen. i got FreeNAS working again though. i think all i needed was some space from it to clear my head haha.

noobsauce:

Code:
dmesg: illegal option -- d
usage: dmesg [-a] [-M core [-N system] ]

which option should i use then, to figure out the hardware/software errors?

i have another question (of course...i have a ton but im gunna try and figure them out on my own)

i can't remember how i gave myself full rights to my share folder. i made my user Jumpy and Group Jumpy ownership of the volume, and turned on Guest Access to my CIFS share folder, but can't figure out how to give myself log in access to it. i've tried logging in with my user and password when i map the drive on my windows laptop but it doesn't work

okay. apparently all i had to do was reboot my laptop and i was able to log into the mapped drive finally. but when i try to edit a file on the drive, it says I must ask permission from Guest? wtf?

DSC_0809.jpg ok. so i had to restart my server for whatever reason and then it started listing DHCPDISCOVER lines...it booted up with 0.0.0.0, i wasn't sure what to do so i removed the current router settings, rebooted then this happened

*meltdown* wtf
