Hi,

Running FreeNAS-11.2-RELEASE and OS X 10.11.6 and trying to transfer an existing Timemachine from an external HDD over to a AFP share.

I've set up the AFP share in FreeNAS and the Mac recognises the networked share as a Timemachine - can even commence backups.

What I can't do is copy the existing backups (the Backups.backupsdb folder) over to the AFP share location. When I try to do this, I receive "The volume is the wrong format for a backup."

I've allowed a partial backup on the AFP share - to create the sparesebundle image - but even after mounting it, I can't copy across.

Can anyone assist with the migration of the Timemachine over to the AFP share?

Thanks!

I wouldn't even try! Just start with a new backup.

It might well be possible, but I don’t think it would be worth the trouble.

At least for me, Time Machine isn’t the most reliable backup solution in the world and from time to time will want to make a completely fresh backup. This was the case when connecting a USB drive to a Mac device and probably more common when using FreeNAS as I the destination.

Time Machines benefit is it’s simplicity, but I don’t rely on it 100% and it certainly would be my only backup, ever!
