Total noob, multiple failed messages on new install

Attempting new install on HP Z840 with 1tb NVME on a PCIe card (currently loaded with Windows 10) and 2 12tb new y formatted hard drives. Shortly after install begins I receive multiple “Failed to open /dev/shm device, ignoring: inappropriate ioctl for device”. Then followed by multiple “Failed to start systems-journald.service - journal service”.

Any help greatly appreciated,

It needs a complete drive just for boot. (and only a small one at that 32GB-128GB is plenty) so maybe it does not like the fact that it sees an operating system already installed on the NVME which is probably set as your current boot drive. Either wipe it and try again or use a blank NVME saving the windows one.

Thanks for the reply. I wiped the drive and received the same messages plus an additional one "pci 0000:04:00.0: AER: Error of this Agent is reported first".

Further research seems to indicate this is related to the onboard raid controller. The fix seems to be flashing the raid controller to IT mode. Unfortunately those instructions seem to be a bit beyond my comfort level. Unless someone has a workaround, I may give up on installing TrueNAS on this machine.

Some onboard RAID controllers can be flashed to IT mode, but others can't.

However, many onboard RAID controllers can be set to JBOD or PassThrough mode from the RAID controllers setup. This mode would allow the controller to work with Truenas.

Another option is to buy a LSI type PCIe card from a reputable source that is already flashed to IT mode and connect the drives to the card and not use the internal controller. Art of Server has an E-Bay store and sells good quality cards and cables and is familiar with what works in HP, SuperMicro, and Dell servers/workstations.

While this can seem to work, and work for years, problems may arise. Even data loss problems. One issue is out of order writes, (aka elevator writes), which RAID controllers can do, but LSI HBAs with IT firmware do not. See;
