Hi people,

At least since I wanted to change the hostname of FreeNAS, I have in mind, that there are several things you should do over the FreeNAS GUI. Now I was looking for a thread, that has some kind of a collection of do's and don'ts for the FreeNAS shell.

In specific I'm wondering, whether it is a good idea to change file permissions on command line, or not.

Is there such a thread around here, but I didn't find it?

Unless the Guide indicates that you should run something from the command line, don't make any configuration changes in Shell as they won't be written to the configuration database.

Hey, thank you for your quick answers!
Ok, that is an interesting rule. I was asking, because of my root user issue in GUI, where I can't change permissions over the GUI anymore. But since it is supposed to be done by GUI, I should fix the issue first...
Thank you!

I don't know what root user issue you are referring to.

If you can't change things from the root account in the GUI, then you have some major problems with your server

Jep, I do think so, too.
I found some updates today for FreeNAS, that point in this kind of direction, but I'm not sure in making updates while there is this strange root user behavior... :-/
