To RMA or not to RMA, that is the question.. ( WD RED 3TB, less then 2 years old raw read errors)

Hi Guys,

So i've had my system (Nebula in signature) running for a while and i got an error in the smart reporting ( selft-test count failed from 0 To 1) apparently due to read failure.

It has been increasing ever since although sometimes if completes without an error ( strange). I tried reinserting the drive in the bay thinking it was a bad contact, swapped the drive to a different bay ( which is on a different sas cable and controller) but it keeps doing the error wat the same LBA..

So my question is: what do the more experienced guys here think ? RMA or not worry yet ?

If RMA: is this something WD would accept for RMA and are there any Europeans here that have had the RMA Procedure completed ? Up until now i only handled RMA with the local store which is always a Hasstle. Mainly because they want the disk before giving a new one which I , logically, would never do. So i'd preffer to do it with WD Direct.

Thanks in advance for the advice !

I'll leave the more technical aspect of your question to our more knowledgable members, but I wanted to mention I've had success in some instances with asking that parts be cross-shipped so that I could make sure everything was migrated properly. Generally they'd charge my credit card for the new part and then refund it when they received the defective part a couple weeks later. I can't recall if WD does this, but it might be something helpful to ask for.

WD in the US will do advance exchanges; not sure about outside the US. But if you deal with your vendor, you'll probably get a new replacement, while if you RMA the disk with WD, you'll end up with a refurbished disk instead.

As to whether to return it, it's pretty consistently failing SMART tests. Those tests are internal to the disk; cables or other external factors shouldn't affect them. I'd be interested in seeing what a long SMART test does; none of them have completed during the time in your disk's SMART log. But if short tests are consistently failing, that should be adequate grounds to RMA the disk.

Yeah, not only that, but he can't even get SHORT tests to complete. If possible, OP, I would like to see the COMPLETE (i.e., do not edit) output of "smartctl -x" instead of "smartctl -a".

Either way I'm going to recommend an RMA, but I would like to see your extended SMART output, maybe to assess if there was any way you could have prevented the problem.

+1 for RMA. I just recently did an advanced RMA with WD USA and had a replacement within a couple of days. Hopefully you can get a similar outcome in your location.

Alrighty, let's RMA then. Now i do have a spare lying around here so I might just already replace this disk. I just wanted to make sure that WD would accept these error's for their RMA.

Thanks already for the input !

Right, so, this smartctl output looks pretty innocuous. I don't see evidence of running the drive too hot, etc. I think you just got unlucky. These output warnings you have indicate that a very specific part of the platter surface is jacked up.

Carry on, RMA it, and proceed. You just got unlucky bro.
