Ok what am I doing wrong? I originally built on 8.0 upgraded to 8.02 when it came out removed and readied my arp shared set to time machine discover mode set perms. When I try to do a time machine backup it sees the share starts to backup then gives an error about required features not supported. Any clue what I'm doing wrong?

I am too receiving these same errors. There is nil support on using Time Machine with Mac OS X Lion. I've searched and researched. Its either a netatalk issue or something else. I can't even confirm if this works anywhere else like Ubuntu or the like. I resorted to using an older airport extreme with an attached hard drive. Not what I want, but at least it works I guess.

try disabling DHX2 authentication on the mac using this command in terminal:
"sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array DHX2"

I have it working using lion and freenas 8.02 I just get some console errors on the freenas server but the time machine backups work
