update:
This was happening with the 8.3.1 Beta1. I "downgraded" to 8.3.0-RELEASE-p1-x64, and all is well.
---
I'm having a problem getting set up.
From page 103 of the manual:
I have three new 3TB WD RED drives : ada0, ada1 and ada2. In the Volume Manager, I
selected the three drives,
set filesystem type to ZFS,
unchecked Force 4096... and Enable full disk encryption
left Deduplication Off
selected Group type RAID-Z
When I click "Add Volume" I get (in red), "Select a valid choice. raidz is not one of the available choices."
What am I doing wrong here?

From page 103 of the manual:
if you select three disks, you can create a UFS or ZFS stripe, a UFS RAID3, or a ZFS mirror or RAIDZ1
