SOLVED Thousands of ZFS Errors Overnight After TrueNAS Core To TrueNAS Scale Upgrade

Yesterday I did an in place upgrade of one of my TrueNAS servers from core to scale. I did this mainly so that I could more easily setup hardware acceleration for plex. Regardless, after a few hours with no issues I suddenly started to get warnings about read/write errors. Then, suddenly TrueNAS 'Faulted' one of my drives, then another, then over the course of another hour or two it set three more drives to 'Degraded'. The pool consists of 8x10TB Seagate Exos X14 drives in a Raid Z2. I franticly started to copy the super important data off of this machine just in case the pool died on me. When I woke up this morning I was greeted by almost 3500 ZFS Read/Write errors.

It seems very unlikely to me that 5 drives would die at the same time (Although I suppose anything is possible). What could be going on here? Prior to this incident, none of the drives ever failed a smart test and none of them are over 10000 hours. I am currently running a long smart test on each of the drives marked as 'faulted' and will update this thread with the status once those finish. I also ran a short test on one of the 'degraded' drives and it came back perfectly clean. I am also running a full scrub on the pool. I still have full access to the pool over SMB and my plan is once the data copy is complete, to reseat all of the drive connections and the drive controller in hopes that will do something.

Does anyone know what might be going on here or have more troubleshooting steps for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best of luck! I have found TrueNAS to be somewhat of a drama queen telling me everything was lost, that the pool would have to be destroyed and rebuilt when only a few connectors were unhappy. Hopefully, your system will similarly easy to repair.

I really wish TrueNAS was better re error messages. Don’t just tell me that there is an error but specify the issue and options re how it can be fixed. Ie are drives missing and hence the import fails, etc. Blanket “I’m dead, don’t bother trying to resuscitate me” messages are less than helpful.

I just received the results of the first long SMART test. I have included it below. It doesn't seem like there are any disk problems, at least not yet. I don't fully understand how to read the output but my understanding is that as long as the 'value' is greater than the 'threshold' then the drive is ok.

And that the other 3 are on the system board SATA ports?
Or visa-versa?

It is possible that SCALE is doing something different in regards to the disk controller. Making it hot, and thus unreliable.

My apologies for that. The enclosure that I am using is the SilverStone CS381B. It is populated with all 4 fans (2 intake 2 exhaust) as well as I added some 40mm Noctua fans for each of the drive cages for direct airflow through the drives. Temperatures have never been a problem. They aren't the lowest in the world but they aren't awful either.

I am using a pice to sata adapter card for my drive controller. It's some off brand thing using an asm1166 chip. It has 8 sata ports so all the data disks in the vdev are routed through that. The boot pool, cache, and log drives are directly connected to the motherboard.

Something interesting is that last night the number of errors on the drives was slowly increasing however, the total number of errors has not risen since early this morning even though I am still accessing data from the pool.

Is there a specific sata hba that is recommended for TureNAS Scale?

The data copy finished so I was able to shutdown the system and reseat all of the sata connections to the controller as well as I reseated the controller in the pcie slot. Upon reboot of the system, almost all of the ZFS errors have disappeared, no drives are marked as "faulted" and 3 drives are marked as "degraded". It is also resilvering. I'll keep you posted as to the status of this.

Is it possible this was some sort of bug? Or is this normal when you restart Scale?

Yes, any of the SAS 2 or 3 LSI / Broadcom / Avago / HP / Dell / IBM controllers that support IT mode. Not the MegaRAID series, which do hardware RAID.

Your ASM 1166 chip uses a port multiplier;
It is a low latency, low cost and low power AHCI controller with six SATA ports and cascaded port multipliers.
Note that it says "six" / 6 SATA ports. You said your card has 8 SATA ports, thus my guess is that it has a port multiplier on one of the 6 SATA ports.

SATA Port Multipliers are highly discouraged;

As you found out, going from CORE to SCALE is not quite an upgrade. It is just different. And in your case, it appears that the disk controller worked better with FreeBSD based CORE.

Thank you for this response! I'll order a LSI 9207-8i and some cables to get it situated. Hopefully that will remedy the issue!

I just installed the new HBA. So far so good. Seems like a few drives resilvered. I just cleared the zpool status and am running a scrub. No errors yet but I'll keep this thread updated. I'm crossing my fingers!
