I'm not aware of ZFS having a "backup drive." But do you still have access to that drive? Try installing it and see what happens.

Ohhhh wait it just came to me. I did set up a backup drive at one point. It was not part of the volume per say as it did not host any data. But I'm guessing that's the missing device it keeps asking for.

Is that possible?!
Yes and you made it part of the pool as a stripe disk. So your data is gone unless you can get that disk back in its original state with data intact.

No, all is not well. As you've just seen, if that disk fails, the whole pool goes along with it.

Yeah time to destroy the pool and rebuild since you have a strip disk.

Yea thanks for the heads up again. That's the original plan, backing up data to an external at the moment. Purchased 2 more drives and will deploy ZFS2 afterwards.

RAIDZ2 will be a much more stable and fault-tolerant arrangement than the RAIDZ1 you thought you had, and vastly more so than the RAIDZ1 striped with a single disk that you actually have.

There is no such thing. Please don't propagate this incorrect terminology.

The term you're looking for is RAIDZ1/2/3.
