I presume your 32gb usb stick is USB3 capable, where an older 8gb may not be. Have you tried different USB ports? Some folks have reported problems when trying to boot from a USB3 port. In some of these instances, using a USB2 port worked. Also, at least one person commented that his system would boot after disabling USB3 support in his bios.
Although this may not be your problem, it is well documented that FreeNAS and USB3 do not play well together.
