The SC846E16-R1200B chassis includes the BPN-SAS2-846EL1 backplane which supports 24 sas/sata drives. I bought it used and it came with an X8DTE-F motherboard and an Adaptec 6805 controller. So here's where I show my complete storage ignorance... Can I populate all 24 bays with this configuration, or do I need other cables/controllers? I believe from reading that I could plug an sff-8087 breakout cable into each of the 3 backplane connectors, but that would just give me connections to 12 drives. Seems like I'd either need an m1015 (guessing I'll find out shortly that the adaptec 6805 is no good) or some other piece of hardware to support the other 12 bays.

thanks,
will

I use one M1015 + two cables to the backplane, if you scour my posts there is one that is from [H]ard forums about the SAS2 backplanes we have and how many SAS cables to connect.
