Hello,

My issue is that I'm constantly getting "insufficient system resources exists to complete requested service" messages during big file copying. Eg. if I try to copy few gigs of files I will receive one of these messages within seconds. If I keep copying over and over again I can copy the whole content but it's so fustraiting when you can copy only few RAW photos at the time. Restarting FreeNAS, CIFS service etc...didn't helped at all.

My equipment:

Win10 64bit PC with Windows Defender and Windows Firewall connected via ethernet (1GB, no jumbo frames, latest network drivers (Intel 218-V) to HP 1810 v2 switch. My FreeNAS (latest release build, i3 4330, 16GB ECC 1600Mhz, 4x3TB RAID-Z2) is connected to the same switch with LACP.

I have been tested this with another Win 10 PC and I'm facing exactly the same problems.

For weeks I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue and I still cant locate what is the reason for it.

Thanks in advance.

From my experience this problem is always a client problem, and has nothing to do with the server.

The number one culprit is AV software. Try disabling AV and transferring again. The second most common culprit is a run-away service or driver. If the problem goes away after a reboot of the client machine, that's usually a dead giveaway that you've got a memory leak that's giving you this error. The last most common culprit is registry corruption. If you upgraded your computers directly to Windows 10, this could be the source of the issue. At the very least, try making a new user account, in case there is registry corruption in your main user's profile.

Above and beyond that, it will take extensive troubleshooting to solve the issue. Almost always, there is a legitimate resource usage problem that causes this issue, but it usually takes deep diving into memory to find it. Rarely, there is no performance issue, but that has been related to corrupt registry settings. The easiest fix has been reinstalling the OS, though you may think differently.

This problem is occuring on two different machines. Both were clean Win10 installations without any upgrade hassles. Both are using Windows Firewall and Windows Defender without any registry modifications or tweaks. The second machine is installed about a week ago and the problem is 100% the same as with the older one. Both machines are also using local accounts so it shouldnt be up to that either.

I love how you basically read everything I wrote and then said, "No." Did you even try from a different user account?

While the problem is occurring on two machines, they share at least one important similarity: they are managed by the same person. Which means there are certain changes/configurations you are likely to make to both machines, which could be the source of our problem. Don't get me started on how often I've seen that, either directly with myself or with others. They may also share the same hardware, which could point to driver issues. Speaking of hardware, what is the NIC on your clients?

You've also given no indication that you've tested these machines with other CIFS shares. Particularly, I would test them against a Samba share. Also, have you tested a non-Windows 10 machine against this share? If you have a smartphone or tablet, there are file explorer apps for both iOS and Android that let you connect to network shares.

I highly doubt you did nothing else with these machines after creating them, or I imagine that you would have said something to that effect. Did you update drivers? Install any software, especially the kind of software that interacts with the networking layer, like VPN software? Install any kind of management software? Tweak any services?

As per the Forum Rules, please post details of your hardware, dmesg, /var/log/messages, etc. as it helps with diagnosing the issue.

I've tested 3 different shares -> same problem
I've tested with 2 different FreeNAS users -> same problem
I've tested with 2 different Intel Ethernet drivers -> same problem

I didn't tested with the mobile devices because transfering gigs of data from the device is a bit tricky. I can do that if you can't still see anything wrong in these logs.

Hardware specs:

Intel i3 4330
Kingston 2x8GB 1600 ECC RAM
4x3TB WD Red
ASRockRack E3C226D2I (latest BIOS and firmwares)
2x USB 8GB (Kingston & SanDisk) boot disks
(no SSDs or any additional PCIe cards)

HP 1810 v2 8 port 1G switch connected to FreeNAS as LACP

ifconfig (FreeNAS):

Last time I have seen that error was on a PC that had page file disabled. Some "Tune Up" or "Magician" utilities like to do that, if you let them...

I've tested 3 different shares -> same problem
Three shares on where? All on the FreeNAS server? How about trying some shares on a different network device?

It sounds like you still haven't tried making a new Windows user and tried with that. Trying with different FreeNAS users won't make one bit of difference if the problem is with your Windows user profile.
I've tested with 2 different Intel Ethernet drivers -> same problem
On your desktops? Or on FreeNAS? Intel has had some problems with their NIC drivers and Windows 10. The current versions are fairly stable, but older versions had some problems, especially when other networking-related programs were installed, like VPN.

I didn't tested with the mobile devices because transfering gigs of data from the device is a bit tricky. I can do that if you can't still see anything wrong in these logs.
Testing with a non-Windows 10 device would provide a lot of troubleshooting information, and the provided log shows no obvious error or problem.

HP 1810 v2 8 port 1G switch connected to FreeNAS as LACP
Have you tried disabling your link aggregation? Based on your theory that it's something to do with FreeNAS, I would get FreeNAS as back to basics as I could, and then try from there. It wouldn't hurt to back up your profile, and then reset to default. You can always restore your profile without problem, and you won't lose the data on your array.

I don't use any software like that. Pagefile setting is on default (OS manages it).

All on the FreeNAS. Will try to share between the clients and see is there any difference.

I did tested it now and no difference as I've expected because both PC clients are using different local users anyway.

On my desktop. Never tried to mess with FreeNAS driver updates. Previous version was about a year old and current one is the latest one. No changes were made in the driver's settings

Testing with a non-Windows 10 device would provide a lot of troubleshooting information, and the provided log shows no obvious error or problem.

Unfortunately I don't have suitable device atm but I will try to find one. I will try if I could transfer some photos from my DSLR to FreeNAS.

Haven't tested it yet but I will do that if no one can't see any errors/problems in my previous logs?

I forgot to mention that this issue occures ONLY when I try to write something to the FreeNAS' shares. Reading (copying from FreeNAS -> PC) seems to work just fine.

Does the problem still occur if you disable the "full audit" VFS module for your shares?

WOW!! That was the case. I've tried to take a new Veeam backup (before this it didn't worked no matter how many times i tried to re-run the backup) and it worked without a single issue. I took ~3GB Photo folder and copied it all over the shares -> not a single issue. Transfer speed was 80-110MB/s which seems to be just fine.

Should I report this as a bug or can someone of you try to re-produce the issue in your test enviroment?

...oh and the most important thing.... a HUGE thanks for this tip! :virtualbeer: ;)

You can file a bug report at bugs.freenas.org. Be sure to include as much detail as possible.

Do note thought that this will probably be marked as 'works correctly'. You just probably need to reduce the amount of VFS operations that are being monitored by "Full Audit".
