Hello all,

I am a noob with True Nas. I want to backup my files (~1 TB od and create VMs with TrueNas. The priority is to have redundancy and failure protection.

Currently I have:
2x 2 TB HDD Disks
1x 1 TB HDD Disk
1 x 4 TB External USB Disk (can you even use USB disk on Nas?)
1x 250 GB SSD (where OS will be)

I don't have the option of buying more disks so what would be the recomended why to configure my pools?

Initially I was thinking in Mirroring the 2 TB Disks but no idea for the rest.

Can you help? Tks

Mirror the 2TB Disks
Ignore (or use for data you don't care about) the 1TB drive
Boot from the 250GB
Use the USB as a backup that you connect from time to time, do a backup and then disconnect for a week

Hey @NugentS , thanks for the reply!!!

I was wondering.... if I use the USB for backup does it make sense to Mirror? Isn't there an option where I can use the 2x2TB and USB as backup you mentioned ?

No - don't mirror - that will put excess stress on an already potentially flakey USB connection. Essentially TN does not like USB, it can work as a single drive - so for a backup - but do NOT attempt to use USB as part of a normal pool.

You COULD shuck the USB drive and plug it in normally that way 2*2+1*4 could be a RAIDZ1 3*2 for 4TB useable (ish)
