I set up my NAS a while back using the following components:

Gigabyte Motherboard: GA-78LMT-S2
CPU: AMD Sempron 145
RAM: 1 stick of Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333 MHz
PSU: Logisys Corp. ATX 550W

FreeNAS (FreeNAS-9.2.1.5-RELEASE-x64) runs on a SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB Flash Drive.
I'm using a couple Western Digital Green 4TB HDDs for storage.

All has been fine until our house was struck by lightning a few weeks ago and fried some things around the house. Luckily, some great folks on this forum pointed me to a replacement Intel NIC which got me up and running again. I've been taking the opportunity to re-familiarize myself with the workings of this system and the advancements that have been made.

Can I run Steam on a Windows Virtual Machine from my NAS? I realize some hardware upgrades would be in order; I'd just like to know if anyone has successfully done it.

Don't expect to be able to play any games within a VM.

Yes you can, with GPU Passthrough. I played Overwatch in a Windows VM, Intel i5 3.2 GHZ, Nvidia GTX 960 and I had 50-60 fps with occasional drops.

I did this on a Debian host though and the CPU must support IOMMU.
