Old post, but FWIW, when it comes to HDs, there is a firmware tweak you can make to the HDs (probably manufacturer specific) to switch the DAS behavior.

Not unlike the wdidle stuff.

Well I'm 'poor' right now anyhow and SSDs arent' catching up. I still intend to build a new FreeNAS machine in 24 months time, I'm hoping it's FN10 or 11 and 8TB SSDs are under $300 US, we'll see
By then, I don't even know if SATA will still be common. We'll see
Either way it's something the IX guys will need to consider, I suspect HDD's for big storage will switch in the next 3 to 5 years at most.
