RAIDZ2, 8 drives, one being a spare. One drive goes bad, and I followed directions from "6.3.9 Replacing a Failed Drive" but I could not choose the spare. So my question is, what's the point. Now it's possible, or even probable that I might have misunderstood the directions. So the further question is, are you supposed to "replace" the drive with a spare that is allocated in the volume.

Secondly, if assigned spares are not able to be remotely assigned to take over for bad drives, why waste that resource in the first place? From all I've read there a numerous problems with "hot" spares rather than warm, and I do understand (somewhat) that this is a FreeBSD issue, not FreeNAS limitation), but again, what is the reason that someone would want to assign a drive as a spare?

Thanks,

Rich
