I am involved with VMware a little bit through their VMUG (user group) program, and I attend events which signs me up for all sorts of junk mail.

I was feeling a little aggravated this afternoon so I responded to one of them who had a particularly annoying offering^Wpit into which to dump wheelbarrows full of cash.

Hi,

I know it's fashionable to promote yourselves as "best storage" if
you're a salesman shaking the tree for leads, but quite frankly I
vastly prefer ZFS, which trivially scales into the petabytes range
for only slightly more than the cost of raw storage (usually about
$20/TB) plus a server (usually $500-$1000). We've had stuff like
immutability for nearly two decades, though I'm sure the Veeam
integration is nice if you happen to use Veeam.

In any case, all of my customers are 501(c)3's that can't afford
vSphere, much less Veeam, so they all just back up to TrueNAS CORE
and life is good for them at a fraction of the cost.

Sorry, no sales lead here today. But thanks for writing and I trust
you'll find some better prospects out there. Good luck!

Nope. Just a missed opportunity for free bagels and coffee. :frown:

"Ransomware protection..." *munch munch* "...tell me more..." *sip*

Ironically, doesn't iXsystems boast that their TrueNAS hardware solutions are "Veeam Ready"? You could have retorted with that, just for kicks.

If you'd like to send me a few of your systems, I would be willing to test them and share my experience with my peers. I imagine a young and eager company like yours would benefit from the exposure.

Oh you want me to BUY them? Hahah ... I've never heard of you. That's a good one."

Alas not. It used to be that you could get vendors to send a sales engineer with gear to do an on-site demo, but these days, with post-COVID and everything's basically just a webUI so why don't we just do an online demo and call it "hands on" (I'm looking at you VMW), you don't get much opportunity to lay hands on stuff (or bagels) anymore.

When I was a somewhat younger engineer, it was kind of amazing to see NetApp demo one of their systems by yanking a controller and things just kept puttering along.
