[SOLVED] Help please: UI no longer showing TrueNas configuration settings

I have been using TrueNas Scale live for about 2 weeks now, and this evening I found that the user & group definitions had disappeared from the UI, and then all the app definitions disappeared too.

It appears that the system dataset may have disappeared.

I have a reasonable set of snapshots, so hopefully it can be restored from somewhere.

But I have no idea how to diagnose and fix this issue - so any help gratefully received

P.S. It is possible that I did something stupid, but AFAIK I didn't do anything that should have caused this.

Datasets & Shares are still visible. My SMB shares are still accessible so it looks like the actual users and groups still exist in Linux, just that the UI has lost the definitions. Various other settings are still visible (presumably those that are derived from the underlying configuration rather than those stored in a TrueNas settings dataset.

If you have a configuration backup, import it.

I don't have one. But I have access to the system backups taken at 3:45am each day. Can I download one of these, combine it with the password seed file and upload it?

Clearing browser cache didn't make a difference (wasn't expecting it to).

Backups or snapshots?
Where did you place your system dataset?

I have at various time had it in the boot-pool and in the apps-pool (both of these on SSD rather than HDD).

These backups are the ones taken automatically by TrueNas Scale at 3:45am local time on every TrueNas Scale system everywhere.

Yes. That's a configuration backup.

Ok - I copied a couple of days of the backup databases, and renamed them and combined them into a tar file in the same format as the config file downloaded from the UI and uploaded them, and they did NOT fix the issue.

Groups and Users lists are still empty (even with the show builtins turned on). My Apps are still running even though the Apps screen is empty of any apps.

And weirdly, in the systems setting shell, the default font size comes out blank but the other font sizes work.

The font thing felt like a browser issue, and eventually it turned out that the whole thing was a browser issue - but not one that clearing the cache would solve. But I did track it down and fix it. Phew!!!!

Can you elaborate so that future readers can fix as well?

It was an ad blocker that for some unknown reason started blocking javascript even though it had previously been allowing it.

I KNEW IT. The TrueNAS GUI is just a glorified advertisement.

As far as I could tell, it tried to hide the footer div but in doing so I think it stopped the JS from working.

P.S. I am just grateful that I can use such a great NAS O/S completely for free - and as such I might well be happy to see a few banner adverts in return for the benefits I get - but instead as far as I can see there are not really any obvious adverts in the WebUI.
