Hey Everyone ..

So round two and I can remote nothing has changed .. Still the same issues .. So I am a lost at this point ..

So at this point I might as well start looking for a new raid card as I don't know what else I can do other than go back to what I know ..

I was once in a similar situation (different context), and the issue was I typed a character in the password wrong or I had not seen a space before or after the user, the password or the path.
So, as idiotic as it might seem:
  • set the password as 1234
  • check the user has no "hidden" spaces
  • check the path has no "hidden" spaces
If you already tried, please do it another time. Sometimes we just overlook things.
I whish you luck

The log output showed that the credentials worked though. Something prevented the connection after the SMB authorization.

I would look at defaulting router and Windows networking settings. Turning off network monitor systems that may be installed.

I don't see why that would affect the permissions issue. But, it sounds like Core would meet your needs fine also.

Thanks Indivision .. I got nothing to lose by trying I guess .. seeing how I am on hold for moving data any ways as I had a hard drive in my current media / NAS die and had to replace it with one from the new system so I wouldn't lose any data ..

I mean all I want to do is

1. make a redundant data drive
2. make a windows 11 vm to run some apps

its that simple .. its not like I am running a million dollar business off this thing ..

The only reason I picked Scale to start with is my friend thought Core was going away and Scale was the new version ..

I am sure we saw an earlier post indicating that the samba version was identical between the two. The core os of the two are different so you will not see identical behaviour, but I honestly feel your issue must be something fundamental.

Ps do you use any auto fill extensions or browser functionality? One of the weirdest authentication problems I ever had turned out to be last pass browser extensions thinking my user admin page was a logon prompt and changing values without me noticing it.

I do use LastPass plugin for work .. But I also chatting with a friend of mine and said something about maybe it was a SMB thing with Windows 11 .. So I checked and by default " SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" is not turned on .. So I turned it on , but need to reboot for it to take effect .. Still working so cant do that yet ..

So if Core and Scale but use the same thing for SMB sharing .. to me they look the same so I don't understand the different between them .. So should I try Core or Scale again .. Thanks ..

You do not need or want to use SMB 1.0. You will use SMB 3.1.1 if I recall correctly once you get a share functioning.

That is really old and insecure. 3 should work for you by default in both trueNAS and windows11

Core is based on FreeBSD, scale on Debian Linux.
They use different base OS's but the majority of the middleware running truenas is the same.
Scale is just in it's first release cycle, core has been around much longer and had more testing and performance tuning.

Since in essence they do the same you could try core, but the steps to get shares working are essentially the same.

I run on CORE, never had any issues.
There are also more tutorials / information about CORE than about SCALE.

Quite a few more installs of core, so maybe that helps you find a guide or a post somewhere that helps you past your blocker. But if it was me, you just reinstalled and with the suggestion notes I mentioned you should be able to troubleshoot your fresh known state. You can post the notes, post the screenshots of all the screens you touched, and the results of the samba troubleshooting commands that were suggested earlier, I think that would give you the best chance. Even if you accidentally share something secret, once you know what your blocker is .. you will have a path forward

Well it seems "Core" doesn't see the built-in network card .. and I don't know anything about linux and such to know how to fix this .. So maybe I true Scale again ..

Hey Everyone .. So thanks to Core being around a lot longer than Scale .. I was able to get everything working today with only some trouble ..

But

1. SMB Shares are working
2. VM's are up and running

Only thing I have left to figure out is how to turn it off after the vm shuts down .. Once I get that figured out and my other parts show up I should be all set to start the migration from old to new ..

So wanted to thank everyone for the help ..
