SMB Shares ??

Hello Everyone,

I need some help .. First off let me say that I am windows person and this is my first time with TrueNas and Linux .. I am currently trying to deploy Scale to replace my current windows 10 media server .. my reason behind this is my raid card is failing and I would like to move away from hardware raid ..

I have followed both the following videos from Youtube and I am still having issues creating shares so I can start moving over the data .. I do everything in the videos but when I go to my windows computer and I type in the ip address of the TrueNas box it will keep asking for a username and password even though I am putting in the correct information ..

I even went as for as Deleting the Pool and starting over and still same issue ..

Thoughts ? help please ..

It's tough to troubleshoot from here since something could be wrong from beginning to end since you are just starting out.

A couple things stand out to me from your description:

A) The fact that Windows is asking for a password is a positive sign. That suggests that the SMB and server are working and that the problem is likely in permissions/path.

B) You put the server IP in by itself in Windows? Usually, when I make a share, I then put "\\my.server.ip.address\myShareName". Do you maybe need to add the "\shareName" to your path in windows?

C) The username when logging in with SMB needs to include the "scope" like this: "\\yourServerName\yourUserName". Are you including the "\\yourServerName" part?

Huh? I've never done this, in any guest OS--Windows, macOS, or Linux.

Maybe you happened to use same names for two different networks?

Never worked any other way for me. On multiple installs of TrueNAS/SMB and Windows.

Certainly that would be needed in an Active Directory scenario. Otherwise, maybe if the NAS and the Windows installation were set to different workgroups?

I think that is the case. I believe if those are left at defaults they will be different. So, this would affect a lot of users.

I'm pretty sure the default for both TrueNAS and Windows is WORKGROUP. But it certainly could be something to look into.

Aha. In that case maybe I changed it at some point and forgot. So, have always needed to add the leading path. In any case, it's probably not a bad practice since it shouldn't hurt anything if it's not needed and will fix something when it is.

[I just checked and SMB and my Windows machine are actually both on "WORKGROUP". So, must be something else...]

Currently I have nothing setup ..

I deleted everything so I can start over from beginning .. I just need a guide or some steps to follow .. All I have setup is the pools , nothing more ..

Also there is only one network in my condo , and no active directory .. Just my windows computer , the current media server , the trusnas scale box and some roku's ..

I don't have Active Directory either. I always thought that Active Directory would actually solve away needing the "scope" part since AFAIK it involves sharing credentials between multiple machines. But, I could be mistaken. Every router/network is different. So, there could be some other setting I'm using that causes it to be required. I just brought it up because it was the solution for me when setting SMB up on Windows years ago. [Check your Windows settings to see if your workgroup is named "WORKGROUP". You could have changed it at some point "MyHouse" or something.]

I suggest following the iX docs directly rather than any other guides/videos. The installation of the OS is covered via the install wizard itself. Then there is info on setting up SMB shares here: https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/scaletutorials/shares/

I recommend setting up a share with wide open permissions first. To test that it's working. Then you can tighten permissions and security from there and test as you go.

Check back if you get stuck on a particular step.

How hard is it to make a share .. I am the only person on this network , Windows is so much easier but windows doesn't do good software raid ..

Do I need to make a "data set" for each on of those ? I have just been doing the "pool" as "Data" and one "Data Set" as "Media" and then when I do the share , type in the folder name I want ..

Please post screenshots of your settings for all relevant pages (share, storage, user, permissions, services). Maybe we can spot something wrong there.

I don't follow the information about D: with folders under it in Windows? Are you trying to share data in Windows TO your server?

Last night before calling it quits I wiped everything out and recreated the pool .. So I have nothing currently setup ..

So I could follow the video again and then take a video while I am doing it and post it .. Just let me know ..

I have also tried once everything is setup to do the \\truenas\media and then the password and it doesn't work ..

I think you are missing the user and permission configuration on the trueNAS box. When the TrueNAS box is in a workgroup without AD. You need to create a user on the TrueNAS box and assign the SMB share permission to this user. Then go back to your windows PC typing in 192.168.x.x or whatever your TrueNAS IP. when it pops up for user name and Password, use 192.168.x.x\username (this is the user name you created on the truenas box) and the password.

Tried that and still doesn't work ..

I have tried the following and both don't seem to work .. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong .. but it is frustrating ..

Interesting. Maybe that is the difference: the type of Windows login being used (ie admin vs regular vs guest vs MS vs local etc).

I think screenshots are better than a video. Get it installed and set up as far as you can. Then post screens of all relevant pages.

I will try that .. but my friend had an idea as well ..

Seeing how I need to make a Windows VM on this box as well .. Why not mount the drive to the VM and then do the shares that way just like I am used too .. Would Solve a bunch of issues .. I just don't know how to make a VM yet or how to mount the "data" Pool ..

Thoughts ?
