Is there an up to date thread on how to set up a cross-platform for both windows & macOS?

I tried to google some but it's mostly out dated.

If you are just trying to create a share from your FreeNAS to be accessible from both Windows and Mac OS... Creating a generic SMB share will at least broadcast the share to both Windows and Mac. At that point there are some authentication configurations to give each individual user their own login.

Generally speaking, just stick with defaults unless there's a specific reason to do otherwise (for instance Time Machine).

There are several ways this can be done... You can use local zfs replication with an additional physicalbox or you can use rsync for a cloud solution.
