freenas got very upset about one of my disks, a 6TB WD Red drive. I replaced the disk and made it happy once again. now I am trying to understand the SMART results. it starts with overall-health assessment passed but also says pre-fail a bunch of places.

i have attached the report the disk is still under warranty will wd replace it based on these results?

Yes, they will.

Majority of your SMART tests do not make it past 50%.

Plus these lines:
Code:
199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count	0x0032 200 200 000	Old_age Always - 29
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000	Old_age Offline - 1

thanks a lot for the reply!
I am defiantly not adept at reading SMART tests will start an rma

The pre-fail and old age is just basic information nothing to worry about. However the smart tests are failing with an error, and it's been doing it for a long while. So basically there is something wrong with the disk but because smart is getting hung up it's not reporting much.

Since the disk is already out of the system you could run badblocks on it and double check which should make the smart tests run all the way through or force the error to materialize. However they should be willing to RMA it due to the LBA error alone.

Hopefully your RMA is better than my current one. They showed it should have originally been shipped out to me on 10-25 but it didn't happen until 11-7 and then UPS had an issue so the drive hasn't even left CA yet.

They don't make them easy and different drive models, even from the same vendor, will have differences in how they display the results. Go to a different brand of drive and it changes even more.

Yep and some of the Seagate drives just show huge seemingly random numbers as defaults.

UDMA_CRC_Error_Count tends to indicate a cabling issue, unfortunately, once its set it never resets, even after the issue is resolved. Still, the test failures means the drive is ready to be replaced.

Do you recon WD accepts RMA based solely on UDMA_CRC_Error_Count parameter?

UDMA CRC it's not a disk problem, but a failed SMART test is, and more than enough reason to RMA.
You can just tell them that it is giving errors. The web form doesn't require a lot of specifics for an RMA to be issued.
