Hi. I was doing drive validation using the SMART tests (from Uncle Festers Guide) and I got some curious results that maybe you can help me with.

The drives are Seagate 5.0TB ST5000DM000-1FK178 (Yeah, I know cheap ones.) The complete results from the extended test are at the bottom, but the numbers I'm curious about are Item #1 & #195, they show. . .

Code:
  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x000f 114 100 006 Pre-fail Always - 60130752
195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 114 100 000 Old_age Always - 60130752

So, is this drive bad or is it okay because hardware ECC corrected the read errors? The test says no errors logged. If I call Seagate Tech Support you know they are going to say the drive is fine :)

Thanks in advance for any info you have to offer,
Megan Quattrocchi

Welcome to the forum!

FWIW, I have some older Seagate ST1000DM003 drives which all return a very large raw value for the Raw_Read_Error_Rate attribute, yet still function. I don't trust these drives, and this is one of the reasons why (along with the 50% failure rate I've experienced with that particular brand and model).

I'm not familiar with attribute 195 (Hardware_ECC_Recovered) as none of my drives return that value, so I don't know whether or not you should panic about these results. :)

In general, the hard drive manufacturers will RMA a drive without demur if it fails their diagnostics; Seagate's are called 'SeaTools' and are available here. Because your drives have passed the extended diagnostics, they will probably pass Seagate's diagnostics as well and therefore, as you mentioned above, Seagate is unlikely to replace them.

Also, whenever you post SMART results, they're easier for us to read if you enclose them in 'code' brackets, like this:
Code:
