I've searched and searched, but found nothing related to my problem.

I've configured a SMART test to run on a schedule, and I've set it to check at certain intervals. I also have SMART enabled on my drive. I try starting it by click it to On, and it appears to load for a few seconds then remains set to Off. On the console, it says "freenas smartd[7906]: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed but has no entries (like /dev/hda)". I have no idea what to do from here.

I am having the exact same problem and have been unable to find out why.

I am running 8.0.4 release p3

Below is the console output:

freenas freenas: Starting smartd.
freenas smartd[5129]: Configuration file /usr/local/etc/smartd.conf parsed but has no entries (like /dev/hda)
freenas root: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/smartd: WARNING: failed to start smartd
freenas freenas: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/smartd: WARNING: failed to start smartd

opening the smartd.conf file indeed shows that the file is empty except for:

################################################
# smartd.conf generated by FreeNAS
################################################

I have verified the steps to fully configure SMART:

1 - created and scheduled SMART tests
2 - verified each member disk in the volume is set to 'true' for Enable SMART
3 - checked the SMART service configuration, using defaults but added email

I ran the gpart show command for fun and all drives from da0-da13 show up with the correct information.

I'm not really sure what to try next. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Thank you!

I think I know why, it is a bug in ix-smartd detecting SMART support on disks...

Not much you can do without code hacking...

Thank you William. Below is the output. I see it is indeed saying that the device does not support SMART. These devices are all 2.0TB Western Digital black drives.

[root@freenas] /# smartctl -i /dev/da0

Looks like you're using RAID controller and exporting the devices as raid 0, no JBOD option...

Not sure how to fix it

Yes, it's an old HP Proliant DL 420s with a P400 controller.

Unfortunately it doesn't have a JBOD option. It all makes sense to me now...

Thank you!
