SOLVED SMART 8 Seek_Time_Performance Failing Now

Specs:

Supermicro X8dt6-f
Using the onboard SATA controller and onboard SAS controller flashed to the correct version of IT mode.
Dual Xeon E5640
48GB DDR3 ECC ram Hynix
7 X 4TB HGST Deskstar NAS drives RaidZ3
Rosewill Photon 850
4U rackserver case, just a cheapo no caddies or connectors. Cables go straight to drives.
FreeNAS-11.0-U3 Installed on a pair of USB drives

The drive in particular is connected to the SATA ports. Got an error when I was taking my wife to a doctor's appointment earlier today and did a short SMART test to try and confirm but it showed all clear so started a long test. Going to start the RMA now but wondering about the error and what it means for the drive health. Want to make sure that it is an issue for sure. Also wondering if anyone wipes the data before shipping out a drive for RMA.

You're doing the right thing by starting the RMA. I would also be replacing this disk.

Ok, thanks. Pretty sure it should be done but normally people are having other things go wrong and it passes smart long and short tests. The drive doesn't support conveyance testing but I am guessing that one would show an issue. Well now to pull it out and get it replaced.

Well, WD/HGST is really dropping the ball on getting the replacement sent or so it seems to me.

Got the RMA issued on the 18th of Oct. Shipped it off the 19th and it was received by someone on the 23rd. Dropped them a line to check and make sure it was received and dealt with rather than tossed in a corner and it was shown as processed on the 24th. On the 25th a tracking code was issued, so I am thinking a replacement should arrive on the 30th or 31st. Nope, still sitting in "we probably lost it before it got to the truck." limbo.

I know that they switched the drives from being 64MB of cache to 128MB but still if the tracking number is issued why is it sitting unused. I contacted once already and was informed:

I have checked that drive sent on 25/10/2017 but new RMA label is created on 01/11/2017 with UPS shipping services.

I have done a couple RMA's over the years and this one so far has been one of the worst I have had to deal with. I almost wonder if they just decided to string me along while they fix the issue in the drive I sent in or patch the problem with a software change and then send it back.

Ok just a final update. The replacement FINALLY shipped out on the 7th. Arrived on today (10th) and testing has started. All the included paperwork with the drive shows a 10-25 ship date but I have to guess that either they lost it, messed around and waited to ship, or backdated papers to CTA's.

The process has been less than stellar so hopefully no more bad drives and this one has no issues either.
