@depasseg identified that camcontrol can handle issuing the necessary ATA commands (including the security erase beforehand) so we're actually covered from this front. Man page for camcontrol is here.

There's no NVMe equivalent yet, sadly.

Aah. There it is. I was ready to bet money there was a way to do it in BSD. I just couldn't remember how to do it and I wasn't sure if I was dreaming it up or what. Glad we figured that out.
