Hi all,

I currently run two older machines as file servers in our house. One is for TimeMachine (older ibm running ubuntu with netatalk) and the other is for media and file storage (computer spec'd below running WHS). I would like to consolidate to 1 machine to do everything and hopefully integrate some power saving features when idle yet be able to nearly saturate the NIC when in use.

Things I have:

6 x 2TB Samsung HD204UI
AMD X2 4800 2.4Ghz Dual-Core
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe 8xSATAII
4GB DDR400
Intel GigE pci-e NIC

I have been reading up on the pros/cons of running ZFS/RAIDZ2 with the 4k drives and from what I read, it seems like I should be ok with the 6 Samsung HD204UI's in a RAIDZ2 config. The question is whether or not running a RAIDZ2 config on the computer is a good idea. Under WHS i have them all shared as separate drives without any redundancy and i have a closet backup every month for 80% of it.

So, should I try running Freenas or keep doing what I'm doing? Couldn't find anyone specifically using an A8N-SLI Deluxe or A8N32-SLI Deluxe so I figured I'd make a new post. Any advice is appreciated.
