Since FreeNAS 11.3 Can't use "previous version" with only Ms Office Files

I really like the ZFS snapshots on my SMB shares. It allows users to easily restore their files by themselves when the files get lost or screwed up.

It seems that it's no longer possible to use the windows features "previous version" since FreeNAS 11.3

It's possible to see all the previous version from the snapshots.

But, when I click on any of those versions and try to open it, I get this error message

It seems to do that only for MS Word and MS Excel and in fact in files from the MS Office suite.

I tried it with Office 2016 and Office 2019 with the latests patches and updates on the latest windows 10 version 2004.

I am able to browse the snapshot folder by using \\servername\Sharename\@GMT-date.of.day-time.of.day format. I can see the files there but, it's still not possible to open it.

I tried to add the location in the Office trusted location and it's still not working.

Now, here is the interesting part. I am able to use the previous version with the exact same Office and Windows machine but, from FreeNAS 11.2.

It's very strange as like I mentioned, it's possible to restore pdf, jpg, png, txt from a FreeNAS 11.3. It really seems that Office screwed up something, but why would it work with 11.2?

I will downgrade and rebuild to 11.2, but before doing that I wanted to know if other people experience that and/or if someone has an idea where to start looking to fix this?

First time poster here, let me know if you need more info.

Thanks for your help

Interesting, seems like a bug. Do you have any custom AUX parameters specified? Can you open a ticket on jira.ixsystems.com with a debug file attached? (System -> Advanced -> Save Debug)

Yes, confirming I'm seeing the same behaviour. I'm on FreeNAS 11.3-U4.1 and Office 365 Apps for Enterprise. Are you using the new replication engine? I'm still using the legacy replication engine from 11.2. I have LEGACY mode snapshots.

Thanks for the recommendation. Jira NAS-107253 created.

The only parameters that I believe that I modified is "enable autotune" in (System -> Advanced)

I am not sure. How can I check that?

Yep, already sent a copy in PM and also in the jira ticket.

My periodic snapshot only says Finished in Green.

Does it mean it's the new format?

@anodos found a work around. I might let him comment and in case there is no news in 2-3 days and if it's ok, I could paste some interesting finding from the jira ticket from @anodos .

The workd around is: to simply drag & drop the file from the "previous version" tab.

I'll let him add more technical details.

Thanks all for your help
