I've had a Synology for a while now, but I've been running up against its limitations, and have been meaning to build a FreeNAS server whenever I had the free time. And the time is now!
I'll post a thread about my proposed build soon, but I'd like a machine that's flexible enough to serve as both a local backup server (that can automatically do offline backups) as well as a media server. A Synology's CPU isn't really powerful enough to cut it, and their packages for the software I'd like to use are hit-or-miss.
Plus I've been meaning to dip my toes in BSD and try ZFS!
