Hi all,

My first post here so hope I abide by the rules.
My server was down yesterday as we have had some power downs, but more of spikes than power cuts as they were extremely short, so short in fact that none of the equipment in the house lost its settings.

Anyway, I had to hard power down my HP N40L MicroServer running 9.3 Stable release off the USB drive.
Today I found it was down again, and I mean not responsive, but still powered on.
The problem I have is that I have no screen conected to it and SSH was not responsive, so I powered it down.
Extracted the below message from the console after power up.
Can you tell me what is going on please?
Is it just another power spike I was not aware of, or simply something is starting to go on here?
Thanks!

Quick test: take a new USB stick, clean install FreeNAS to it, and try to boot. If that works, your original boot stick was probably corrupted by the power problems.

I shall try that, even though I dread any changes to the server.
I guess the ZFS pool will just be recognised by the new fresh OS?
Any recommendations on the USB drive that is reliable?
I think I have normal SanDisk Cruzer in there currently, but am thinking of squeezing an SSD in there for stability (don't think it will affect the speed of the NAS in general?).

Just to mention again, the system worked fine yesterday after power fail, it booted up correctly, so there is no issue currently, I hope.

Should backup your configuration regardless (just as a Standard Operating Procedure anyways). Do you have a UPS? If not, then you should really consider getting one.

SSD is becoming the preferred boot device (I use them) and is better overall IMHO. Doesn't need to be anything fancy older 32 GB ones from eBay are what I use (mirrored). Of course, you would still want to properly vet the SSDs (Burn In / SMART)...

Great! Thank you!

Can anyone quickly point me to what exactly I need to backup before I proceed with swapping the USB sticks or migrate to SSD please?
Thanks!
