Got an email from my freenas last nite. Any idea what this is?
And yes I have an IPMI and yes I tried to configure it within the gui but that was like a week ago when I first got the beta. I got similar emails on the 16th and 17th as well.

Code:
freenashost.domainname kernel log messages:
> ipmi0: KCS: Read failed on byte 2
> ipmi0: KCS error: 5f
> ipmi0: KCS: Read failed on byte 2
> ipmi0: KCS error: 5f

Were you able to figure this out? Is there an issue with the BMC?

This diagnostic is what happens when your IPMI controller has gone out to lunch. It can be fixed by resetting the IPMI controller, which is something which requires a complete power-cycle. Remove power from the machine, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. The IPMI should start working again.

Ok. Powered off.. Unplugged freenas.. Actually plugged into the UPS I got for it.. turned it back on..

I have verified I can query things with ipmitool commands.. Guess I should probably give it 24 hours (just in case)..
Will let you know if the messages stop..

So it hasnt been even 24 hours since full power cycle and I noticed in the log..

Code:
Dec 2 11:31:05 hostname ipmi0: KCS: Read failed on byte 2
Dec 2 11:31:05 hostname ipmi0: KCS error: 5f

I verified that I can still query ipmi with ipmitool. I dont really see where the problem lies.
How can this be debugged?

RobertT,

Are you using the hardware in your signature? Have you update your IPMI firmware and BIOS to the latest?
