Greetings all. I am going to be building FreeNAS on older hardware but I will need additional SATA ports than the board has. Can anyone recommend a good SATA bus card that will go into a PCI Express slot or PCI-16 slot?

Thanks,

Yes, you probably don't want a "SATA bus card" because who knows what chipset it has. The best way to add disks to FreeNAS is with a host bus adapter (HBA). This is basically the enterprise SAS equivalent of a "SATA bus card" except that it's much more likely to work well.

The HBA card in sig was $25 on ebay ..it was listed as an IBM ServeRaid M1015 and then I flashed it to IT mode. .. you can add up to 8 sata or sas drives.. break out sata cables was $7.. an HBA card flashed to IT mode is going to be your best bet
