sage file server

I have a network of 20 w7 pc's running Sage line 50 account 's we use a standard PC with W7 as a file server and experience severe speed problems. I suspect that the problems lie with the server and am looking for an alternative. FreeNAS seems an obviouse choice and I am hoping that someone will have had experience of a similar situation. Sage is particularly difficult for networking as it opens and closes large numbers of files and builds temporary indexes on the server.
