Yes, it makes perfect sense. You want to back up individual files from your PC to the FreeNAS system, in lieu of an image of your PC disk(s).

I keep most of my work files on the FreeNAS system itself, instead of on my PC.

Different philosophies. Neither better than the other - just different! :)

I suppose you could look at something like robocopy, or Cywin's rsync instead of the rsync package you've been using and had problems with...
