Is there a setting on RSync that will help avoid the a broken pipe message when backing up files larger than 1GB?

Could you provide a few more details about how you're doing the backup? My guess is either you're hitting a disk activity time-out or the connection is dropping.

FWIW I'm exporting an NFS mount to my Linux system and am using rsync to mirror /home. I am not seeing this issue. My FreeNAS box has an Supermicro X9SCL-F-O motherboard with Intel NICs.

I have a 4TB USB Drive (NTFS) that is plugged into the USB port of my HP N40L Microserver running FreeNAS 8.3. But wait....sorry....I just found this thread :-

http://forums.freenas.org/threads/faq-mounting-ntfs-drive-to-copy-files-from.11478/

TL;DR; DO NOT USE NTFS FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN TEMPORARY WAY TO MOVE FILES!

Thanks KevinM, you have given me the idea of backing up to Linux and then reformatting the USB drive as NFS. Hopefully WOL is supported by Linux so I can save power.
