Hello all :)

I have start to use FreeNAS since 1 year and now I'll start to really use it :p
soo i'll upgrade to ECC

I plan to upgrade my pool up to 6disk

I'm thinking about 2 config :

Case: NODE304
RAM: 2x8go DDR4 260euro
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220V5 (3.0 GHz) 279euro
MB: E3C232D2I 210euro
Total : 760euro

or
Case: NODE304
MB: SUPERMICRO MBS A2SDI-8C+-HLN4F 522euro
RAM: 2x8go DDR4 260euro
Total : 780euro

Witch on is the best ?
Any other idee for some mini-itx mb ?

Depends on what you intend to do with the machine. Just the case, CPU & RAM does NOT a machine make !!!!

Why does it have to be mini-itx only?

If you are stuck on mini-ITX, then you could also consider MSI S0891 which is substantially cheaper than both the boards that you have listed. It is currently listed at 88EUR on ebay.co.uk

Yet another option is Tyan S5533 (this is the one that I use). I bought it for $160.

I'm stuck on this format because I already got an Node 304 on my current build

I will use it as a multimedia server (plex, etc ..) and for backups

Make sure you get a single separate hard disk to backup the most critical datasets on your pool.

Ok. Your requirements don't seem to be very complex. Like I mentioned, I use Tyan S5533 in a Node 304 as well. I have the Pentium G3240 as my CPU and works for 2 plex streams simultaneously. The box also is used for 3-4 other plugins/jails. I think that a similar build should serve you well. Cable management is tight in Node 304, so you might want to keep an eye on that when buying a PSU. A modular PSU would be best. With 6 drives + the board and CPU + a couple of USBs, you should be looking at 450W to 550W PSU.

See this thread for a couple of things that I have noted on the MSI S0891 board.

I know you said you already bought the Node 304 case, but yet another option in terms of size is the pre-built HP Proliant Microserver found here .

You can always return the Node 304 or sell it on ebay. But the HP Proliant gives you a ready to go system for a whole lot cheaper. Just add more RAM and your HDDs and you are good to go.

Hi,

are you really limited to m-ITX. I had the same idea when building mine until I realized that I had a much wider choice when giving space for m-ATX. Cases and cooling are suddenly no issue any more.

Any time you consider building a system for FreeNAS, you should take a look at these: http://www.freenas.org/freenas-mini/
I have seen many builds here where it would have been better to just buy one of these.
Now, if you just like to get your hands in there and do it yourself, I get that.
Still, it might bear looking.

hum thx all, @Stux Really nice work :)

I'll go for an E3C236D2I + G4620
E3C236D2I -> Impi + 2lan is a must have for me
G4620-> it's really cheaper and Xeon is overkill :)

Any more advise for the best Quality/Price ram ?
What do you think about Kingston 2*8 Go ValueRam server 2133MHz DDR4 ECC Reg CL15

Fair enough, but the MSI S0891 that I linked to in my earlier post also has IPMI + 2LANs at LESS THAN HALF the price. (88EUR vs 210EUR)

It won't work, because Registered Ram is not supported on that platform

Hum, actually it doesn't have IPMI ...
As far as I understand, the IPMI model is the one with the Aspeed AST2300 Graphics, while the one above states clearly in the description that it has the Aspeed AST1300. And regardless, IPMI 2.0 does not mean that it also has iKVM (which is the really nice thing to have)
Having said that, I must admit it is a really nice board and very cheap for what it has to offer.
Nice find! :)

You are right. I just did a cursory search for MSI S0891 on ebay.co.uk.

But you could always buy the model with IPMI -- These 3 model numbers seem to have IPMI
  • MS-S0891-030 (model with IPMI 2.0 support)
  • MS-S0891-040 (model with IPMI 2.0 support)
  • MS-S0891-050 (model with IPMI 2.0 support)
