I don't think the ST4000DM000 is shingled

That's regular PMR, I believe the only 3.5" Seagate SMR drives besides the Archive drives are the 8TB Barracuda Compute disk model ST8000DM004 and all the other sizes from the same family, ST6000DM003, ST4000DM004, ST3000DM007 and ST2000DM005.

If there is some legal recourse to force them to be truthful and clear in the product documentation, it would be good for us all. I didn't get burned as bad as you, but I bought three of the shingled drives and lost a decent amount of cash because I turned around and sold them again as they were no good to me.
I replaced them with this model which appears to work well:

I don't think the ST4000DM000 is shingled and I know they are working well for me. I am currently running 24 of them between my two FreeNAS servers.

Meant to say that the 6 drives currently running tests are up to 40%. The tests are a kind of scrub, but the access time for each block is recorded in 7 bands as well as a bad block band, so when that is finished I will have a good idea if any drive will need replacing. So far no bad blocks and only 1 drive with 2 blocks with a read speed of >500ms. (HDSCAN v4.0)

HGST HS14 14TB (now called Ultrastar DC HC620) but it's clearly identified as host managed SMR
I need to remember to learn more about host managed SMR :)

Much learnt this week and much reading to do on the subject. Looks like SMR drives are here to stay. I have read somewhere this week that Seagate are dropping the name Baracuda and rebranding the drive (Maybe being called Exodus). The new rebranded models will clearly state SMR in the spec sheets, a positive step
