Hello All,

I am relatively new to FreeNAS (have heard of it, seen it, just haven't moved towards it till now)….as I (for whatever reason) was stuck on using open filer (nice product for what I'm doing…but it lacks features, and development is so sloooooow) anyway I just built a system with the following specs….and I'm hoping that some of you here can provide me with some STEP by STEP info on tuning my environment for the best possible performance……I ask for step by step, based on my lack of knowledge in and around linux….so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running a low end Intel Server Board (an S3420GP) with a 2.13 Dual Core Processor and 8GB of ram, I installed the OS on, a 40GB SATA disk hanging off of the onboard controller, as for network storage (or disks that will be used as such) I have a 1TB USB drive attached (that will hopefully be used as a scratch disk to some of my VM's) I am thinking of adding another 1TB USB drive as well…which I am thinking can be used for backups and such…….

I also have 2 1TB drives (that are hanging I off of the onboard controller) that I have setup in a stripe (I know there is absolutely no redundancy here, but my hope is that the tradeoff will be improved performance….keeping in mind that no critical data will be placed on here, and everything placed on here will be BACKED UP). Finally I have a 4TB disk, that's been constructed on a low end LSI raid controller…….(can't recall the model number). This will be used for my VM's (iSCSI Storage to two vSphere Hosts).

In terms of networking I have 3 Dual Port e1000 NIC's all in LAG's, with LAGG0 being failover (for management) and LAGG1 and 2 being for iSCSI traffic (both on separate vLANS……something to keep in mind is I have switches that support 802.3ad, vLAN's etc). All of my disks have been setup using ZFS, rather than UFS. I have not setup iSCSI yet…….looking to do that tonight.

However prior to doing so, I am hoping that someone here can look this over this config and make some recommendations (if you will) with regards to tuning this system so that I can get the best possible performance……this is a home lab, which based on what I've just seen on the site will be running 8.3.1, as I am running 8.3 with a P1 or something along those lines…..and given what I just saw, it may be worthwhile to upgrade……..

Thank you,

aXcelio
