I'm troubleshooting a cpl problems I'm having with hardware and I'm at the point where I think I may want to start with a fresh install of FreeNAS 9.3 ... trouble is I've already copied and sorted half a gig of data that would take hrs to put back.

Question: is there an easy way to do the reinstall without losing my data? thanks!

That's the whole point of separating the OS from the storage disks. You can reinstall the boot device all you want without affecting the storage data.

I thought zfs used encryption and if you didn't prepare for a migration, you wouldn't be able to access the data again?

Only if you checked encryption when you created the volume. If you did, make sure you know the passphrase and have a copy of the keys.
