Recommendations for a USB3 to SATA/IDE adapter?

Hi all, I recently purchased this StarTech USB3 to SATA/IDE adapter, but found on first use that the USB connector was flaky; dmesg logs indicated that the "USB cable might be bad". I tried the USB 2.0 port on my PC, and found that it worked only if I seated the USB connector *just right*. I've never had trouble with the USB ports on my computer before, so I'm chalking this up to a bad USB connector on the actual unit. I'm contemplating exchanging it, but for the price (like $40 USD, ouch) I was hoping there was something out there that's a bit better quality or more proven. Reviews on this unit were positive overall, but I'm still not convinced of anything that StarTech makes really. Any suggestions?

I think StarTech is an OK brand, not too chaby.
If USB3 capable, then I would look at the 5V source. Maybe it is flaky.
