Read/Write Errors Encountered During Scrub

2.) Hardware:
  • Lenovo TS440 Server
  • Intel Xeon CPU E3-1245 V3 @ 3.40Ghz
  • 32GB Crucial ECC Memory
  • Mobo - Not sure on Mobo but it came w/ Lenovo TS440 Server
  • 8x 5TB WD Red HDD in RaidZ2 (Roughly 40TB Raw, 27TB Accessible after Z2)
  • RAID Controller: RAID 500 (Discrete, 0/1/10) - AKA MegaRAID 9240-8i RAID Controller Card
Hello Everyone,

Let me preface that I've got SMART Tests and Scrubs setup according to Cyberjock's suggestions. Yesterday, my bi-monthly scrub encountered an unrecoverable error. It was 1 read error, but it said the scrub was able to repair itself with 0 errors. I didn't think much of it. I cleared the error and ran another scrub after the error was cleared and it found no errors.

This morning, I awoke to another error, different drive, it was a Write Error instead of a Write error. I copy pasted that one below:

Now, I suspect that I could probably clear the error and run another scrub and maybe it would be fine, maybe it wouldn't, but I'd like to know, should I be concerned? These are large drives with roughly 8TB of data on them and part of me expects there to be an error here or there, but I'm relatively new to FreeNas and don't want to be ignoring tell-tell signs of something bad to come. I've seen these errors before with 1 read or 1 write error before (maybe about 3 other times in 12 months). Could someone advise or elaborate as to what may be going on or what I should do?

My SMART tests run according to Cyberjock's settings as well and all their last runs went through fine with no errors.

I'm not sure if it could be related, but when I pull up the status shell thing on Freenas, I see the following:

You seem to have 3 drives throwing errors. Please post output of smartctl -a for all drives (or just post a debug file).

Yes it has, sorry, I should have mentioned that I flashed it to IT Mode. I couldn't post all 3 drives' smart results so I had to post each in their own post below.

I see no sign of problems with the drives, which implies the problem lies elsewhere. I would suggest the following troubleshooting steps (ordered by simplicity):
  • reseat/swap all power and data cables
  • replace power and data cables
  • replace the HBA
  • replace the PSU
Other members might have different/better ideas.

I thought the same thing. All 8 Drives' smart data looks good, all tests completed with no errors. I'll pull it apart today and double check that I didn't knock something partially lose or that nothing looks dirty. Just so I understand correctly what the scrub write/read errors are, that means that it encountered a bit of bad data while checking the integrity of the volume? What is it "writing" when it encounters a write error. I understand the read error or the checksum errors.

At this point, would you recommend clearing the error and running another scrub? As far as I understand, this statement "scrub repaired 24K in 9h43m with 0 errors " means that zfs was able to fix the error using the checksum/parity, correct? I haven't noticed any of my files messed up.

Anyone else have any ideas/advice? I want to better understand what could be happening. Thank you Robert for all your help already.

An error indicated in zpool status could be from any activity, not just a scrub, so that just indicates a failed write. The log you posted shows failed writes on da5 and da7.
At this point, would you recommend clearing the error and running another scrub?
I would. The idea is that having fixed existing errors, you clear the error indicator so that a subsequent error can raise a new warning. I would run the next scrub after the initial hardware checkup (reseat all cables).

Did you receive an alert email at that time? If not, get this fixed too.

I was wondering about that when I looked at the logs as well. I get the emails from the Server like Daily run output, Daily Security Output. I got a Critical Alerts for that failure as well. But I've never received a SMART email before. Do those need to be setup somewhere else? If I go to System > Email > Send Test Email, I receive the email. I also noticed under Services > S.M.A.R.T > there's an entry called "Email to report" I have my email address entered there but I'm thinking that's where that failure to alert happened. Am I missing something?
