I'm just curious how re-arranging drives on a 8 bay hot-swappable t320 unit would affect a pool. Decided to organize due to additional hard drives that is going to be added soon.

Situation:
I want to re-arrange my array of drives to organize it even better (from 0-7, 8 bays).

Current Setup:
Pool 1 (striped disks) - occupies slot 0 , 1 & 4
Pool 2 (mirrored disks) - occupies slot 2 and 3
while leaving 5,6,7 open.

After re-arranging:
Pool 1 (striped disks) - occupies 4, 5 & 6
Pool 2 (2 vdevs, mirrored) - occupies 01,2&3

Concern:

  • Will my current pool setup be corrupted especially the Pool 1 with the striped disks if i move them to slot 4,5 & 6?
  • Would it be better if I just create a backup for Pool 1 and rebuild it completely right after moving them to the desired slot?

ZFS identifies drives by UUID so reshuffling drives should have no impact.
