I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue I'm seeing with Freenas 11 RC 3. I've created a VM with a ZVOL. The Guest OS installs fine (Ubuntu 16.04) but when I take a ZFS snapshot of the zvol, the VM won't boot. It goes to the UEFI shell. I've tried snapshot with the VM running and with it stopped. I'd like to see if I'm not doing it correctly or if there is some more steps I need in order to do this. My thinking is that I could use snapshots to roll back VM changes quickly.

You're saying that the VM won't boot after simply taking a snapshot? That shouldn't be possible. Are you sure it successfully boots more than once without taking a snapshot?

Simply taking a snapshot shouldn't cause any observable change to the underlying zvol.

What are you using to create and run the VM?

I am using the FreeNAS web interface to create the VM, Is there another way?

Further testing and I have found it was the grub loader. I used a symlink to the grub file and it is fine.

Thank you all!
