Hi Guys

I read in the guide http://web.freenas.org/images/resources/freenas9.2.1/freenas9.2.1_guide.pdf page 17 that when I want to use RAIDZ2 I should use either 6 or 10 disks.

Not I have been looking at chassis from SuperMicro and I would like to use a tower but it seems all towers from SuperMicro have a maximum of 8 disks?
http://www.sona.de/.2128096041-Tower---4U-Chassis

Would it be ok to use 8 disks for RAIDZ2? Or what would be the disadvantage?

Or does anyone know of server tower chassis with 10 available slots for harddrives?

Thanks a lot

Its probably not very sensible to let the chassis dictate you pool layout in most cases.
If you want hotswap, there are a lot of cages that mount up to 5x 3.5" into 3x 5.25" drive bays.
If you prefer internal mounting take a look at the Fractal Define R4: 8x 3.5" and 2x 5.25" (which again can be adapted to 3.5")

Great tipp, indy!

I will get the DEFINE XL R2 Black Pearl.
It has 4 x 5.25" bays so more than enough space for 2 more HDD and maybe SDDs in the future.

I tried to look for some 3.5" cages in 5.25" bays but all I found are rails which I can put into the 5.25" bay. So one 3.5 HDD for each 5.25" bay.
But you said something about cages for the 5.25" bays?
Can you tell me who makes those kind of cages?

Thanks a lot

Thanks!

Wao pretty expensive compared to rails. But i guess a nice option to "pimp" the NAS
