I have FreeNAS installed in a Supermicro 826TQ chassis. I've had it this way for about a year. My apartment is relatively small and the noise is starting to get to me.

I want to replace the fans and PSU to make it quieter. I've replaced fans on desktop PCs before, but I'm not sure if there's anything special I need to know on the server. Like I probably should use a better quality fan on this, right? I don't really know what to look for on the power supply.

Any recommendations? I only plan on having 11 hard drives in the machine and nothing too fancy in terms of CPU.

I have an SC 846 JBOD, which was loud. I tried replacing fans but couldn't get enough airflow to keep things cool enough. I also found that the PSU fans weren't really an issue. I found that the fans weren't connected to the right controllers in order to be variable speed. I changed that, and it was much better. So I would look into which headers your fans are connected to and if they are variable speed.
